about

17 años bajo tierra is the result of the sonic research of german trumpeter Nils Ostendorf and colombian bassist Santiago Botero around melodic motifs found in the gaita flute - a type of indigenous flute of the northern part of Colombia.

The compositions and improvisations create an imaginary landscape that evoke in a poetic way the phenomenon of emerging cicadas every 17 years from beneath the ground.
The idea of waiting and trusting a creation process, the small sounds produced by their acoustic instruments and synthesizers that resembled the fine movement of the wings of the cicadas or the process of changing skin, similar to what happens when a piece of music develops. All in a period of days, after the next 17 years pass and they emerge again.

The music was recorded, organized, discussed and rearranged between Bogotá and Berlin and the production process became increasingly important, adding layers of synthesizers, field recordings and processed sounds. Daniel Freitag managed to accentuate all those sonic nuances in the mix, and created a rich stereo image in which the listener can fully immerse.

The process was completed by colombian artist Glenda Torrado. She did the artwork, evoking literally the non human aspect of the project depicting a cicada like animal from larva to maturity.

This music created in pandemic times, now finally can be heard thanks to the support of Sonic Transmission Records.
